ONERA, a central player in aeronautics and space research, employs more than 2,000 people. As national expert, ONERA prepares the defense of tomorrow, responds to the aeronautical and space challenges of the future, and contributes to the competitiveness of the aerospace industry in all the disciplines and technologies.

All the major civil and military aerospace programs in France and Europe carry part of ONERA’s DNA: Ariane, Airbus, Falcon, Rafale, missiles, helicopters, engines, radars, etc.

Recognized internationally and often awarded prizes, its researchers train many doctoral students.

The Aerodynamics, Aeroelasticity, Acoustics, Department of ONERA (DAAA), has the mission of preparing technological responses for the benefit of the industry to improve the Aerodynamic, Aeroelastic and Acoustic performance of aircraft, and meet the challenges of competitiveness, societal needs, environmental and defence.

Your mission

In the research unit “Numerical methods for FLUid mechanics (NFLU)”, you develop research on topics relating to high-fidelity adaptive computational methods in fluid mechanics, in the general context of precise and robust numerical models for complex systems including advanced turbulence models, in an environment increasingly integrating multiphysics simulation platforms.

This domain of research includes in particular high-accurate space-time discretization schemes and high-performance solution methods, mastering the uncertainties of physical and numerical models integrating deterministic/non-deterministic hybrid approaches, implementation on high-performance computing platforms performance (HPC), as well as the development of new approaches using artificial intelligence methods for scientific computing.

As research scientist in the NFLU unit, you are at the heart of software and algorithmic design to meet the challenges of high-performance numerical simulation of complex flows in the aeronautical field.

Your activities will be carried out within the framework of a European aeronautical project for the development of the new CFD CODA software led by ONERA, DLR (German aeronautical research center) and Airbus, and involving several European universities and research laboratories. These activities associated to the EU project NextSim will relate more particularly to the following points:

  • Design and implementation of new algorithms in precise, robust and efficient fluid mechanics in polyhedral unstructured meshes, integrating strong interaction with ONERA teams expert in development d validation and our European research partners
  • Performance analysis and optimization on ONERA HPC facilities or in industrial partnership
  • Contribution to project technical meeting and publications

Your qualifications

  • PhD with in-depth knowledge of applied mathematics and numerical methods, in particular for fluid mechanics.
  • Proven competence in scientific programming languages (C++, C, Python, C++ V11 appreciated)
  • Good communication skills
